Forest Guide (FG)

A special instance of a LoST server. It is part of the Location to Service Translation (LoST) protocol query process and allows client functional elements to discover call routing information outside of its domain (typically their ESInet or state level ECRF/LVF).

form

An HTML-based, interactive, ease-of-use Web site feature, containing checkboxes, option lists, text boxes, and buttons that allow users to submit pre-formatted requests or queries or to respond to pre-formatted questions.

formal proof

A complete and convincing mathematical argument, presenting the full logical justification for each proof step, for the truth of a theorem or set of theorems. The formal verification process uses formal proofs to show the truth of certain properties of formal specification and for showing that computer programs satisfy their specifications [TCSEC].

formal security policy model

1. A mathematically precise statement of a system security policy. Some formal modeling techniques include: state transition models, temporal logic models, denotational semantics models, and algebraic specification models [POSIX.6].
2. A mathematically precise statement of a security policy. To be adequately precise, such a model must represent the initial state of a system, the way in which the system progresses… (Read More →)

formal top-level specification (FTLS)

A Top-Level Specification that is written in a formal mathematical language to allow theorems showing correspondence of the system specification to its formal requirements to be hypothesized and formally proven [TCSEC].

formal verification

The process of using formal proofs to demonstrate the consistency (design verification) between a formal specification of a system and a formal security policy model or (implementation verification) between the formal specification and its program implementation [TCSEC].

format

1. The arrangement of bits or characters within a group, such as a word, message, or language.
2. The shape, size, and general makeup of a document.

format converter

1. In video and television technology, a device that allows the reformatting of a digital data stream originating from one sampling structure (lines per frame, pixels per line) into a digital data stream of another sampling structure for the purposes of recording or passing the original data stream through distribution devices designed to accommodate the latter structure.
