expert system (ES)
A computer system that facilitates solving problems in a given field or application by drawing inference from a knowledge base developed from human expertise.
Note 1: The term “expert system” is sometimes used synonymously with “knowledge-based system,” although it is usually taken to emphasize expert knowledge.
Note 2: Some expert systems are able to improve their knowledge base and develop new inference rules based on their experience with previous problems.
